Changing Hearing Aid Batteries

Some hearing aids use small disposable batteries. Changing them safely and regularly helps prevent devices from cutting out or sounding weak.

First checks

  1. Wash and dry your hands before handling batteries or hearing aids.
  2. Make sure you have the correct battery size for your hearing aid.
  3. Keep batteries away from children and pets.
  4. Work over a clean surface so batteries are easier to manage.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Open the battery door gently. Do not force it.
  2. Remove the old battery and dispose of it safely.
  3. Remove the sticker from the new battery.
  4. Allow the new battery to sit briefly before use, if this has been recommended for your battery type.
  5. Place the battery in the compartment with the positive and negative sides facing the correct way.
  6. Close the battery door gently. If it does not close easily, check the battery position and try again.
  7. Turn the hearing aid on and check whether sound has returned.

Helpful tips

  1. Keep spare batteries in a safe, dry place.
  2. Do not store loose batteries near coins, keys or metal objects.
  3. If batteries run out unusually quickly, let your clinician know.
  4. Carry spare batteries when travelling or attending long appointments.
